Confused about who is a Brahmin ?

I am finding it difficult to come to terms with the fact that Baba Ramdev has been running large scale vedic schools in Haridwar where they are teaching Vedas to Yadav and other non-Brahmins.
However he is not the first one who did it on a massive scale but it was Arya Samaj who still teach Vedas to non-Brahmins.
Coupled with the facts that there are a LOT of R1a Yadavs and non-R1a abbo looking Brahmins who know the Vedas AND there is intra-group conflicts within Brahmins regarding the legitimacy of claims of Brahminship by different Brahmin groups (Sakaldwipi, Chitpavan, Bhumihar, Tyagi etc).
These things make it difficult for a simple Hindu like me to figure out the very simple question "Who is a legitimate Brahmin ?".
Here, I am specifically concerned about "Brahmin" as the religious Title and NOT "Brahmin" as the c@ste group, as I think there is a minute difference between the two.
