Just rewatched that scene when Jesse breaks down in Walter's arms after Jane dies. "Jesse look at me son", "put your arms around me"
There is no way Walter didn't care at all, I always felt a very suppressed but underlying theme was about Walter White, a chemistry school teacher trying to help himself and his old student Jesse from a bad family /bad group in their own fucked up way, through the cancer, through Jesse's family conditions etc
There is no way Walter didn't care at all. Of course Jesse cared about Walter.

All those times Walter saved Jesse, the last time Walter saved him and helps him escape, and he looked proudly at Jesse's last batch (it was clearly him being proud of teaching Jesse chemistry finally, and all the "but he was happy because Jesse only reached 97% purity" doesn't matter, it can be both)

I think Walt did care though. The entire HS teacher seeing himself in the slacking student, Walter trusting Jesse despite Gus repeatedly telling him not to, Jesse executing the task of killing Gale saving both of them, both of them going through near death situations saving each other from death. Surely it mattered for something.
