Technically Buddhism just appropriated the native faith. When you think about it, Buddhists in Japan did get butchered during the Sengoku war to end all wars. Some were literally burned alive. What's good about Buddhism, is how it absorbs anything, which basically pushes the existence of Buddah on it, but everything else stays same. So original faith just continues to exist in its own right.
