Actually reservation was not initially part of constitution, it was implemented by the parliament for SC/STs though.

There was a court case against this in Madras, the High Court ruled in favour of petitioner, as any sort of reservation was clearly against the fundamental right to equality before law clause.

However then JL Nehru brouht the first amendment to the constitution, it enabled the goverment to provide on whim, special "gibs" to certain communities (SC/STs back then) and this wouldn't contradict the fundamental right of equality, they literally wrote this orwellian tier BS in constitution.

Nehru back then did this unironically to help SC/STs and thought this would end the problems however he was proven to be wrong as more and more communities started agitating for reservation, eventually he became disillusioned with the whole thing, writing articles against further reservation, he feared India would become a third rate country.

Eventually his fears materialized when mandal comission was implemented, OBC "category" was invented, rest is history.
