it used to be very different. People on the India side of the border used to pride themselves on their Maithili being the prestige dialect of the language, used in official documents and records, but Lalu came and fucked everything up
Now, if you cross the border into Nepal, the situation is a lot better. The newspapers, radios, everything are in Maithili. Even though they are not taught the pure version in schools, the people on the Nepal side manage to speak it better than the youth in my village who speak a patois of Bhojpuri mixed with a few Maithili words at best.
But then again, Rajputs in my district are known for their Maithili being significantly shifted westward compared to the Maithili spoken by Maithil Brahmins, so that may also play a factor.
I envy Bengalis for having a state to themselves. Mithila needs more autonomy
