art was intertwined with religion all through history, somewhere the utilitarians won over mainstream and work triumphed over play.
art became a behavior of excess that drained efficiencies.. and hence left to artists, bohemians, gays and other kinds of anti or asocial beings.
this meant all their angst and resistance would come via art. making art as a medium of rebellion and resistance and hence politics.
identity politics around these marginalized groups made this notion even stronger.
but remember that its a feature of modern world where religion renunciated to self-help and theology.. and art became a plaything of capitalists and dumbocrats.
in essence art will always be religious, a sacrifice.. and beauty and truth are indistinguishable..
