also, before sao, the mainstream anime consumers in the west were mainly into sadslops (the equivalent of western young adult stuff). maybe the only outliers were comedies here and there, but usually action were expected to take a more sad or dramatic seinen tone. sao was different, it showed the success of kirito in hardship, the happiness of being a family man and responsibility for ones own life and destiny. media meant for young adults has to emphasize despair in a hopeless society and world and loneliness. sao was the opposite of what the audience at the time wanted so it's natural they hated it

eh, you're sounding like an ironic weeb. these weren't even the reasons why it got hate. ecelebs did the major damage than anyone else, because they were pseudo-elitists at the time of early-mid 2010s. you really think new fag normies care about how deep a story is? no, they watch and go back to normal activities like fucking a woman while she watches anime. they aren't here to prove to any of weaboos that this or that anime is good or bad. there's some stuff sao does well and there's also plenty of genuine criticism you can point out about the anime. i think it's bad but there's far worse anime out there that people won't spend 15 years talking about. anyone who acts like sao is the worst thing ever made has probably seen less than 30 anime. people are unable to admit that something they like has flaws or something they dislike has actual merits.

while the characters were one dimensional and the plot was nonsensical, the premise was new and exciting and plot twists were decent.

nah, i actually loved season 2 more than season 1. alicization was where sao peaked, but the underworld arc felt a bit underwhelming with very few payoffs, especially since kirito wasn't present for most of it
