Isn't it being rare exactly WHY people would rush to buy tickets?

It's rare because there was no demand for it in the past. Big cities would have cinema halls that show them maybe for a few days that too at night. It's very new that these films are being aired in tier 2-3 cities in the middle of the day.
The last time this was the case was Ramayan movie.

Let me clarify what I meant.
People watching a couple of really famous mainstream anime does NOT mean that anime itself is getting mainstream.
Just like how doraemon movies being aired back in early 2010s in theatres didn't mean anime was getting mainstream then.
Most of the people who're gonna watch the demon slayer movie have watched <5 anime in their life, and aren't planning to watch more. Most of these people are tourists, nothing else.

What is mainstream to you then? Because even in Japan, outside of popular shounen, it's usually just a few flavour of the month shows that's actually big.
Go look at their highest grossing anime films and it's the same stuff as it is here and elsewhere - franchise movies from popular shonen, Ghibli and Shinkai films. Stuff like NGE are the only real expections.
And no, doraemon movies didn't get a fraction of the cinema audience and attention as we are getting right now.

Anime getting mainstream means a good chunk of the general population watches anime with some regularity, doesn't matter what.
A good chunk of people watching 3 anime and not touching it again != anime becoming mainstream. It's just those few shows that broke the mould. Tourists will watch them and then claim to say they don't watch anime ("oh except that one fighting show I watched one time").
The entire basis of my argument is that movies and sales won't give a good idea of whether anime is getting mainstream, they're too granular, too specific as data points.

That's exactly what is happening. You might not like what is being watched but the same stuff is exactly what is being watched in Japan.
The niche series you care about or the extensive knowledge and discussion of the medium as a whole you might be intrested in is all carried by a small but dedicated groups of whales.
As for sales, it's the general expections based of pre-release ticked sales which I'm talking about.

It's... not happening though? I don't know which circles you roam in but most people are not watching anime with any regularity. They just like 1 or 2 of these mainstream series and that's about it.
To say that that's what people in Japan do is asinine because it's not like they've watched 2-3 mainstream anime in their life and are done. They watch seasonals at least, which falls under the regularity argument I made.

Let me rephase myself - that's what starting to happen. This kind of petty elitism over shonen is cringe considering that the success of shonen would be a gateway to more anime being screened here the same way as shinkai films did.
>They watch seasonals at least
The median Japanese does not in fact watch seasonal. You grossly overestimate what percentage of Japanese people even watch anime to begin with.
On a side note, I don't know why you'd use that as a yardstick to separate the 'tourist' from the rest of the crowd, when every 'tourist' watch whatever is the currently talked about seasonal more than anything.

Didn't say half of the population has to watch it, did I? A sizable chunk, and a sizable chunk of Japan's population does watch it.
I rather agree with you that anime is starting to get mainstream. And shounen is the way to get there, but to argue that it's already mainstream because the most popular currently airing shounen is getting tix sold is a bit of a stretch.

this isn't the face of anime. it's literally a fighting show made for teenagers, and that is what shounen is
