Not controversial but i will go.
Best generations in the order.
1. Gupta - due to the urbanization they led.
In south you can combine cholas/cheras/pandyas. as honrary number 1.
2. Mauryans - the ideals mentioned in edicts are definitely way higher in human value. solely due to that. and expansion.
3. Honrary small kingdoms here and there Vijayanagara. Rajputs who defended and carried on during the toughest times. And marathas too.

Solely cuz it was peak stagnation, india was drained and our scientific output came to the halt completely. It's pretty much our dark ages except few good buildings here and there.

The biggest mistake around mauryans was them turn towards pacificism thanks to buddhist and even jain ideology. Which proly destined the land to fall.
The damage of british was almost complete societal destruction of Indians, entire society was then rewritten and forced to act from the dubious lenses of the criminals. No honest work has been done by indologist on this. Their whole work went into carrying the same british propaganda post independence to keep society divided.

And it's dumb to say indians couldn't defend. Indian defended and halted the arab conquest.
it's later when they fell. they never got fully subdued. and fought back through marathas it's just that there was too little time for marathas to actually catch up and build a base.
