Yeah, science is a collaborative endeavour. There is no such thing as a "lone genius". The general public does not see it that way however, so men and women of science end up getting pedestalized. They are singled out for an achievement that required the time and efforts of many before them and working alongside them.
So, this "overstating of achievement" happens for both men and women. It is due to a misconception regarding the nature of science, not a misconception regarding women's abilities.

You cannot deny that women back then faced barriers to entry in all sorts of professions, especially fields of research.
Take Marie Curie for example. She faced a lot of restrictions even during her schooling, and when she got her first Nobel, the committee member talked about how "women are created by God yo be men's helpers". If her husband was not supportive, she probably would not have been able to put her talents to good use.
Plenty of women also face workplace harassment and discrimination. I have seen it first hand.
I definitely agree that men are overrrepresented at both extremes of the IQ bell curve, but that is not the only reason why women are underrepresented in research and academia.
An IQ score is not the only indication of success in research either. Take Feynman for example. He had an IQ score of roughly 125. Many experts were surprised, since they expected him to score much higher. Even I have a higher score than him on the Stanford Binet at a score of 132. Yet, he is a celebrated physicist, while I am a retard in a chappal-making forum.
To conclude: We must foster scientific aptitude and temper in both men and women, and ensure that they are able to utilize their skills to the best of their ability. There is no reason to make it a battle of the sexes.
