The Incident: On February 6, 2021, the 26-year-old was fatally shot eight times while standing outside his car in the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven. The shooter had reportedly rear-ended Jiang's vehicle to force him out of the car
The Perpetrator: Qinxuan Pan, an MIT graduate and researcher, was identified as the suspect. Pan led authorities on a four-month international manhunt before being apprehended in Montgomery, Alabama, in May 2021
Motive: Investigators determined the killing was motivated by Pan’s "secret obsession" with Jiang’s fiancée, Zion Perry. Perry and Pan were former acquaintances at MIT.
