easiest way to see what is the common understanding, is to check the wiki and wiki spends first introduction about how it was le rajput event and muslim opposed it - nowhere they mentioned about the number until a dedicated section - but there's funny caveat. they will mention some random number inflated but in the second para a contradictory statement.

It was voluntary self immolation a practice that not only existed in india but also the larger dharmic world. Monks, kings and protestors also committed self immolation. King jaipal of Hindu Shahi, for example, immolated himself after handing over his kingdom to his son.
