Some anon said that almost everyone used to regularly eat meat until the 1800s.
As in, not 10g of meat with 250g of rice, but real meat eating, almost daily.
How did things get so bad since then?

I said it. It's pretty simple, veg diet was not sustainable before pre modern times when most ppl lived hard lives and had huge needs which simple veg diet couldn't sustain. Moreover back in the day most ppl owned sm livestock individually or collectively. It was a waste to let it go idle so ppl ate eggs and meat. And I would not say vegism is the problem for India, it's mostly lack of protein which prior to Green Revolution most people used to get by Jowar, Bajra etc, it's wheat and rice that you need to worry about but that won't generate seethe
