Another day of begging Dyaush to make a separate /mu/sic board already.
J. Cole’s seventh and final studio album -The Fall off is out. I was excited about its release for a long time , especially when Cole claimed it took him 10 years to make this and that this was his best project of all time. I listened to the whole album throughout the day, some songs repeatedly and some once or twice while looking through the lyrics and their meaning. Got to say, jcole has this ability of story telling in his lyrics , that no other rapper has. And the lyrics are as profound as always. The album is divided intp 2 discs of 12 songs each. The first disc is what an average listener would expect from J cole and he delivers it , hard hitting lyrics and fire beats. Disc 2 starts with 39 intro, with the best beat switch I've ever heard, then the disc 2 track 2 , where he raps his life in reverse and that's cool. Disc 2 has more in depth storytelling, from small moments in his life, like an interaction with his fan to bigger changes in his life. It has more laid back mellow beats as compared to disc 1. And it's how it's supposed to end, the fall of is inevitable. Loved the 'what if' track where he portrays 2 different characters of 2pac and Biggie. 'I love her again' is a great track about his old love of hip hop and 'Quik Stop' was a wholesome interaction with his fan (the emotions in this one were intense). The album ends with 'Ocean Way' and at this point I'm all teary eyed thinking this is going to be the last original song i listen from J Cole. But it was what he planned for a long time, the fall off is inevitable, as he passes the pen to the next generation of rappers.
My biased review as a j cole fan : 10/10, I'd put it right aside "4 your eyes only" (they say 2 legends can't co exist??)
Fav tracks (not in any order) :
Only you
I love her again
Quik stop
The fall off is inevitable
Ocean way

What are your thoughts ? I have not yet listened to Joji's Piss in the wind, but I'll make a post about that also soon.

Forest hills drive is undoubtedly as good, but this was it for me, right next to his 4 your eyez only. But, music is subjective, so i might not hear what you do and vice versa.
I heard piss in the wind, but it was alright, not crazy, I won't make a separate post about it. Fav track was Hotel California, the singles were good but that was about it. Kind of underwhelming, but I don't think it was a serious project from Joji. He just wanted to experiment with different styles.

I don't think music belongs in entertainment.
There is so much potential of good music discussion, but it gets buried in the other posts about slop on ent. There aren't many conscious music listeners nowadays, and everyone just listens to music casually, in the background while doing some other thing. I blame tiktok and instagram. A dedicated board would be really appreciated to separate the good from the bad.

Let me tell you something, pick a genre you like. Pick an artist you like, go through his/her discography, find what resonates with you most. Plug in your headphones, pull out the lyrics if you want, and go through it whole, doing nothing other than that). I swear you'll learn to appreciate music more. Even the songs you heard before casually, and you'll start appreciating them for their instrumentals/ deep lyrics and you'll start appreciating music as a whole. You might even resonate with the artist and it truly is the greatest source of inspiration. People with ADHD have zero to no motivation, you have to earn that inspiration by putting effort into listening their craft.

is listening to rap worth it
used to listen to Eminem and Logic when i was shota bacha, i hear rappers like Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott are really popular with zoomers these days. Anything good in them or are they just the same trap-beat mumbled-lyrics type shit?
