The best era of crimson except maybe the wetton years.
I've been on a genesis roll lately and have been listening to the lamb:

Wonderful.
Though the THRAK sections tend to get overused in other tracks by fripp, they are a joy to listen to:
He also does this with motifs from fracture on LTIA pt. III

Do anons here listen to Magma?
I watched a live performance and it was very good but I got filtered by the esoteric/manic playing. Beautiful stuff though.

soz for lack of engagement, only recently have I begun to listen to rock or prog rock in particular, I've listened to frank zappa, KC, dire straits(not prog). Any prog recommendations? besides Genesis and Yes.
Also- absolutely listen to overnite sensation if you haven't already.

kek,sorry too
Ive got to look into more of Zappa than the man himself-
Ive listened to Apostrophe, Bongo Fury, Sleep Dirt and Sheik Yerbouti conclusively with a couple of Belew-O'hearn-Bozzio live albums.
I could be forgetting others.
>Any prog recommendations?
Magma, absolutely
They've got a stellar discography and could become some of your favorite music.
I got into them with their 2000s performances-

just when I thought the thread was dead :P,
zappa does really shine in his individual albums(the yellow shark, jazz from hell).
some class work with MOI is we're only in it for the money, weasels ripped my flesh and one size fits all
that song is pretty heavy reminds me kinda of thrak and larks or Starless and BB

Never could get into the mothers because I found the comedy obnoxious even for zappa.
Need to check out Uncle Meat too.

De Futura? I thought of Starless too.
They are my favourite now.
I'll be posting off and on in this thread, could be good

udu wudu sounds really good! in a way, the gibberish singing reminds me of black metal, in the sense that the vocals are an instrument within the piece and not separate themselves.
>Never could get into the mothers because I found the comedy obnoxious even for zappa.
I tend to like goofy works quite a bit :P so much so I really like prozakc blues.
anywho, I've been listening to a lot of yes recently and man their 2nd album is so amazing(especially yours is no disgrace), I've been replaying that and 90125 quite a bit.

I've never given the mothers a chance, I probably should. I like belew too, its just the jarring 60s sound I don't really like.
I've only listened to yes's CTTE and Relayer and I liked them very much. CTTE being one of my favourite albums.
You could like this rendition of Zess too, its like a meditation almost, tbf all of their works are-

Bruford said that yes is (was?) a vocalist band with good instrumentation and king crimson is a instrumentation band with good vocals.
But I feel as if he underestimates their weaker parts; Anderson is peerless but the howe, bruford, squire, wakeman aren't that far off either.
Similarly, I quite like belew and wetton's singing.
To me, the real difference comes from comparing something like discipline with close to the edge, which marks both of their strong suits.
the differential between their weaker and stronger aspects is most clear here, so I do understand his point. Though yes could have had instrumentation as tight as KC(close to it), while, KC almost wholly focuses on instrumentation.

At the end, Yes wouldn't be nearly even close to being as good as KC if you removed the vocals from both bands.

I agree with this sentiment. But Bruford also tends to downplay the involvement of the musicians he has played with, so take it as you will.
Yes, what I have heard of them, in my opinion are very similiar to Genesis than KC. An emphasis on structure compared to the tight-improvisation of the Wetton years.
But, oh well, I like them all.

>Yes, what I have heard of them, in my opinion are very similiar to Genesis than KC. An emphasis on structure compared to the tight-improvisation of the Wetton years.
Yes and Genesis are proximal to a typical band, KC seems to more on the side of classical composition groups, I'd recommend listening to schubert's piano trio no 2, that strangely feels similar to their style(?).
Well, really while yes and genesis remind me of the work of a skilled craftsman, KC reminds me of a precision engineered workpiece. KC also, sounds emotionally 'dry' or tends towards somberness(which isn't a bad thing imo). Yes is far more joyful.
expounding on the vocals-instrument couple, are you acquaintaned with a-ha? smash hit as their first album, but I think they hit their stride with 'scoundrel days'. Morten Harket outclasses even anderson to me.
brilliant, I understand why my father holds them in high regard.

I haven't listened to anything by them except for their stupid single, always took them for a New Wave boy band like Duran Duran. Maybe I should try them.

I've been on a Genesis roll lately, specificaly Genesis after PG left and when Hackett was still around and by god, is this music beautiful.
I would like to put some money together to buy instruments and learn theory just to reproduce music of this kind. It remains a dream of mine to compose.
Also, I've listened to some of Mahavishnu Orchestra but I find them to be daunting. I have to listen to more.

I've been wanting to learn an instrument for a while, will likely get one by the end of this week, drums or percussion instruments prolly but we'll see.
