>Mera Naam Joker is a 1970 Indian film, directed, edited produced, co-written by Raj Kapoor
>loosely based on his life
>The film was a disastrous commercial failure in India attributed to the audience not connecting with the sad plot and its length.
>However, the movie saw immense success in Soviet Union by becoming a blockbuster.
>It earned 16 crores at that time (1,059 crores in 2024), in Russia alone.
>Considered cult classic today

Do you think it was soviet psyops which eventually they themselves bought leading to this belief.

I don’t think so. Raj Kapoor sold this to some Russian distributors and never even got the profit of those 1000 crores.

>i always felt it was some sort of soft psyops by soviets to push Soviet - India bhaichara type meme.
Can be, but Raj Kapoor was already a huge celeb there. He considered Russia his second home because his movie were more famous in Russia than in India. His movies had been releasing there since 1950s. He was even invited by the soviet government in 1958.

Also another funny incident that I should mention, when Jawaharlal Nehru visited Soviet Union everyone who met him there kept saying “Awara Hoon” which got under his skin. This was apparently one of the songs from Raj Kapoors movie. When Nehru came to India, Kapoor was called to Delhi to screen his movie for Nehru kek
