Humans naturally form tribes.
Japan, Sweden, Scotland etc are nation states.
India, pakistan, US aren't.
Nation states last as long as its nation (people) does.
If tomorrow all the ethnic japanese are replaced by somalians, the nation state of japan will cease to exist.
India isn't a nation state.
World's biggest wars were a really waged by homogenous nation states.
Go and search up the ethnic make up of "nation states" such as sweden, Ireland, norway etc for 99% of existence.
One thing - Nations can sometimes loose state power. Example - poland ceased to exist as a state multiple times in its history, however the polish people the nation survived.
Sometimes Nations take over another states, and redefine them.
France as state was actually established by Franks who were a Germanic tribe that mass migrated in 5th century after Roman Empire's collapse, before Roman conquest, modern France was actually populated by Celtic Gauls (related to Irish people).
