Portugese were incapable of colonizing us. They were given bloody nose by marathas on multiple occassions and were incapable of conquering past a few coastal parts. Do you think us being colonized by brits was simply a matter of luck? No we got colonized by brits the strongest colonial power because we were too tough to be colonized by mediocre colonial powers. Yes and brits were pragmatic. They simply ruled through bureaucracy setup by them but run by indians. They also avoided meddling in socio religious affairs unlike the portugese who aggressively imposed christianity. Portugese tactics of genociding, settling and converting worked with New world ooga boogas but wouldnt have worked in an Old world civilization like india.
