The living standards of mediaeval Europe increased because most jobs back then were manual 'real jobs' which will increase their worth following a population collapse and labour deficit(we can see similar trends in the West where 'blue collar jobs' are better paid compared to the average white collar jobs).
This isn't the case at all in modern era where most things have been automated in industry and most jobs are white collar jobs aka bullshit jobs.

Yes doesnt say much about the individual but statistically it is highly correlated with success in life. The second biggest factor after iq determining success is conscientiousness(hardwork and discipline). You need a mimimum iq for certain professions and past a point high iq doesnt give you much edge. Individuals higher in conscientousness will succeed when iq starts mattering less. You can be a 140 genius but will be surpassed by a 125 iq person, doing pagalo wali padhai, in jee if you dont even care to open the books.
