All three Dwijas can wear a Janeu after they go on to finish Yajnopavitam. Brahmin are meant to wear a cotton thread, Kshatriya a hemp thread and Vaishya are meant to wear a woolen one, each of fhem not allowed to wear the thread of each other.
Cotton is meant to signify purity of mind, hemp is supposed to reinforce resilience and strength and wool is supposed to reinforce prosperity. If someone gets the process wrong, they will all probably see misfortune throughout.
Traditionally it was done before the age of one's puberty, however nowadays it is done at rather late age.
