long legs = longer steps, so top speed with long legs> top speed with short legs
in longer race they can maintain high speed while sprints require burst of acceleration which is done better by those with shorter legs.

For all athletes longer the distance lower the equivalent speed
He maintained a higher speed for a longer distance maybe because the stadium was different or it was windy.
