Could also read Osprey ones tho I don't like them a lot. Picrel is a must read for Armor tech and "Men against tanks" is a must read for anti tank weaponry, tho they are somewhat outdated at this point...
For general WW2, read A world at arms, for op barb read stahel's book and for the macroeconomics of ww2 read the book by that title by harrison.

Comes with application. If it is a technical subject, practice questions. If it is primarily theoretical, jot down the main gist of it as you read. I also find that discussing it with peers increases retention.

That is actually a good trait. Even I do that with topics that I am obsessed about. The best way to not get sidetracked is to flag those sections of the book and return to them after going over the full work. Then, Read up further about topics. I also recommend making notes along the margins, or even adding sticky notes with the additional information.
If you are reading on computer, then just maintain a word file for that book to add the new information that you look up.

I once finished a 900 page book on Jurisprudence in roughly 5 hours. It was written by some judge who was my father's friend, and he wanted me to read it so that I could have some fancy dinner talk and impress that guy. I could have finished it sooner, but I was also making notes and trying to remember stuff.

I do daydream about a tank with a rear mounted oscillating turret, 152mm ETC canon, NERA armour coupled with Duplet ERA, a 360 deg APS, all the best optics on the day, and the front glacis sloped like a strids, switchblade launchers beside the hull, interleaved wheels, and a lithium air battery setup powering 2 pmsms at the front sprockets, but that isnt very econimical and I'm not drawing up a serious design.
