<A group of Gurkha soldiers were being trained for parachute jumps. Before the training began, the officer explained the process to their leader, the Subedar Major (SM).
<The officer said, "We'll fly up in the airplane, and when we reach the designated drop zone at about 5,000 feet, a green light will signal you to jump out one by one."
<The SM immediately stood up and requested to speak with his men. The surprised officer allowed him to leave.
<After ten minutes, the SM returned and said his soldiers preferred a lower jump altitude than 5,000 feet. The officer agreed to adjust it to 4,000 feet. The SM then returned to his men and came back once more, requesting an even lower jump height.
<The officer consulted with the pilots and offered a compromise of 3,500 feet. The SM returned yet again and informed the officer, "Sir, at this height, about 100 men are willing to jump. But if you reduce the altitude by another 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), roughly 500 of them would be ready."
<Confused, the officer asked, "Why does a few thousand feet make a difference when you're all wearing parachutes?"
<The SM's reply was a surprise: "Parachutes? You never mentioned we'd be wearing parachutes!"
The 100 Gurkhas were ready to drop from an airplane from 3,500 feet in the air with no parachute.
