When I was a shota sa little bacha, I used to think that the followers of Bheem were actually worshipers of Bheem. You know? The Bheem from Mahabharat. That TV show was really popular at that time, and I wanted to be lamba, mota, tagda like Bheem.
One day, while my baap was teaching me maths, I heard a rally of SCs marching on the street near my house while loudly chanting "JAI BHEEM", "JAI BHEEM" and playing some dehati music on their loudspeakers. It was Ravidas Jayanti.
I was a foolish nanha bacha. I heard Jai Bheem, I liked Bheem, so I did what any other kid would have done if someone was chanting the name of their idol.
I started shouting Jai Bheem, Jai Bheem as well.
My UC baap slapped me a few times and told me to shut up.
I was very pissed at him for hitting me for no reason at all. I was just worshiping someone who was shown in Mahabharat. Why did my baap hit me? Is Mahabharat not a religious show? Is my baap a naastik? So many things were going through my mind.
It was only later, in kaalege that I came to know that these people worship a different kind of Bheem and that I am the only Bheempaglu who wants to worship the Mahabarat wala Bheem.

Baldau is one of the coolest characters. If you are a pahalwan you should make him your idol.

idk now but yes people did in akharas, balarama and maybe bhim. as akharas disappeared so did his relevance.
bhim and duryodhana two of the greatest warriors capable of wielding maces were trained by none other than baldau aka balarama.

Mostly because of his hatred for reservations.
I was slapped and I still remember the sting.

yaar fellow Bhim mirer. he's my favourite too.
i too, resonate the most with Bhim. tho it is cool to be able to shoot a fish's eye from the reflection of water alone, i would much rather have enough strength to finish the job in one blunt force strike.
if the world was a videeogame, i would want to be the strength and speed build.

in case you guys don't know the og mahabharata had bhim as the main protagonist, most scholars including bibek debroy agree that arjuna and few other brother like nakul sehdev are likely later addition to strengthen indra's supremacy.
one of the example he provides is that even when draupadi's in need she calls Bhim for help, bhim is the one who kills duryodhana and finally avenges draupadi's humiliation.

Interesting yaar. I too wanted him to be the main character and not Arjun.

Mahabharata was worked upon in atleast three separate phases. Transferred from gurus to shishya
>The original version was called Jaya and had 8,800 shlokas. This was expanded to 24,000 shlokas and called Bharata. Finally, it was expanded to 90,000 (or
100,000) shlokas and called Mahabharata.
directly from bibek debroy's book.
During this process there might been expansion on certain sections - addition about stories of Arjuna etc.

what we know is that it was developed in three stages but we don't know what part of the mahabharata were of those. what we have are mahabharata with slight differences, regional changes so on.
thankfully academics at BORI Pune, created the authoritative text by working for almost half a century on it and it goes by usually BORI's critical edition. for academic purpose most will go with this version.
you can find unabridged and abridged versions of this - Bibek debroy's mahabharata is unabridged translated version of BORI's critical edition.
what you are sharing is gita press version of it, there must be slight differences - i don't know much on that.

>slight differences - i don't know much on that.
you will not see changes like Arjuna and Bhima so on, that's scholar commentary that it was likely to be what has happened.
you will find usual story which you know. likes of BORI critical edition spung out certain sections like draupadi's prayers, few other things which i think are part in gita press since it's more spiritual adjacent.
