Gujjar = Gau(cow) char(grazer)

Was it a catch all term for various unrelated nomadic herders and cattle robbers who did not have coherent identity?

It was used for peasant class people and nomads who used to travel with from place to place.

Cattle robbing was common crime before. Like Car stealing today.

Asli chor to Raja log the Jo garibo se loot ke mahal bnate the aur phir invaders se dosti krte the.

People at present should not kang on anyone, especially Kings lol.

Unless u directly related to them, 0.0001% are.

Money and connection is the new king today.

A jhopdi vala can crack IIT and get gazallion lpa package and live king life, better than 90% (indian) kangers of unchi jaati.

Peace ️

I only wanted to know the etymology of the name.

It seemed kinda similar to nishachar निशाचर which is nisha(night) + char(wanderer). I wondered whether char(wanderer) is in anyway related to gujjars who were nomads.

I have no hate for gujjars or rajus. I am neither of them.

Also to me its interesting how you have gujjars in afghanistan and jammu and as far as bundelkhand who differ in language and genetics. Makes me think they arent a homogenous group but rather a cluster of various disparate nomadic herder tribes.

Yeah gurjar pratiharas have a different etymology. Gurjardesa was the ancient name of gujarat which the pratiharas ruled over. Gujarati people were known as gurjaras back then and it has nothing to do with nomadic gujjars who have never lived in gujarat.

Rajputs is a mixed (indian)

Multiple clans of various tribes were sanskritized by brahmins which gave birth to a new (indian) known as rajput

I thought that was self explanatory. Rajputs are a cáste in actual sense of the word i.e. feudal nobility. They arent a homogenous tribe. Rajputs of Rajputana/Rajasthan used to view themselves as separate from thakurs from rest of india tho they all share similar practice of claiming legendary descent as a tool to legitimise their rule.
