Alert: Decade Old Bollywood ArtHouse Attempt
Yesterday I was going through wikipedia link rabbithole and I stumbled across this. Found it interesting how the movie made like 1/27th times the budget in box office collections and decided to watch it.
I couldn't find much trivia about it online but reading few youtube comments I got to know that it was supposed to release in late 2008 but the censor board delayed it to be released in 2010.
Spoiler Free review:
I'm kinda blown away by how ahead of time it was, not the plot but the elements of the movie doesn't fit anywhere in usual bollywood tropes. Even for an arthouse movie this is alot.
They really cooked something blending the themes of stardom dreams, desires, and identity, tying with gender and fame.
The plot is revolving around how parents make or tbh force their kids into early stardom going to lengths of auditioning for roles of opposite sex, then later when they grow up they're struggling with these massive internal conflicts and how it fucks them up as adults.
A popular real life example would be of Ahsaas Channa who played boy roles in movies like "My Friend Ganesha" and "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna".
Later she found success in her own identity, through OTT and other movies. But in this movie where the roles are reversed I feel it's much more traumatic.
The plot is very thin, almost non-existent. But I loved the backdrop, the lights, the camera angles and shot experiments with the cinematography. They try very hard to look avant-garde and somehow even achieve it for some scenes that actually feels impressive for a movie this old. I don't usually comment on actor's aesthetics but Bipasha looks stunning here as the illusory enchantress. The acting was fine I don't really care much for that.
The film's mostly a psychological journey, and honestly isnt for everyone. The ending backdrop, score and visuals are borderline disturbing for general mass. But the message packs alot of Freudian elements I feel with regards to sexuality and parenting. There was a short moment of 4th wall breaking point for the viewer to think?!? which felt odd.
Wanted to have a discussion around it, I suggested this movie to my cinephile friend but he can't bear to watch any movies these days so we only talked till the point he saw.
Wanted to know your guys thoughts. I don't think I'll find anyone who's actually seen this movie in theatres
I would def put this somewhere in Indian Disturbing Movie Tierlist.

(if you're planning to watch the film don't watch this just watch the movie and then comeback later to check how the public perceived it 15 yrs ago in comments)

Finally someone took my bait and watched this artslop.
Well it was way ahead of it's time because of non-greedy baniya producer Sanjay Gupta. He did lot of experiments(remakes) in 2000s.
I really liked the scene where Salim got trapped by Jerry. Dude almost had existential crisis.
Anyways here few more indian distrubing movies.
Eashwar Mime Co. - it was not theatrically release. i watched it on Doordarshan on sunday afternoon. my baap had cut off cable connection due exams so i had no options. i was home alone and getting bored, so started watching it. i was too little to understand what was going on in this film but it scared the shit out of me.
Alag - it was more popular and people confuse it with Kamal Haasan's Abhay movie where he plays the role of bald guy. the main actor in this movie went extreme in method acting and shaved all his body hair including eyebrows. good movie but it's a remake of hollywood movie.
Maatrubhoomi - peak dehaat of haryana
Bhouri - light version of maatrubhoomi, but the stiry is set in uttar pradesh
No smoking - everyone have watched it
Nude 2018 - marathi artslop
Nay Varanbhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha - mahesh manjrekar had a lot of fun while directing this movie, you should google it's deleted scene to know what i'm saying. bloody rascals at censor board butchered this movie.
