Till the early 70's Kolkata was an economic giant not only in India but whole of Asia as well.
It was an industrail hub. Goods ranging from your underwear, beedhi to Ships were produced there.
Communists not only leached it financially but sucked off its vibrant culture as well. Many of the good movies, literature and other kind of Indian art are bengali but decades old and stale by now.
Many influential personalities of India in 20th century were Bengali. Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda, Aurobindo, S.C. Bose, Satyajit Ray, Kishore Kumar and many more.
Today, while Bengali elites still bask in the long lost glory of Kolkata, illegal immigrants roam freely.
Once a city of Joy, Kolkata today is City of Despair.

ChatGPT ka accha upyog notwithstanding, Lee Kuan Yew once remarked that he wanted Singapore to have the industrial gumption of Kolkata . Nevertheless, you have to understand that the British culling of state resources was incumbent with Nehruvian purge of land rights which led to the cultivation of an active base from whence, Jyoti Basu and CPI M came to power effectively incapacitating Bengal. Most deranged Bengalis you'll meet online or otherwise in terms of culture and politics would be the ones ironically studying in better off universities across India.
