In reality Bhumihars were likely descendants from foreign invaders probably kushans or scythians, Brahmin varna is status, many such immigrants over the time came, adopted the religion and claimed such status based on their capabilities, greeks in gujarat became Brahmins.
Do you know Chaturvedis? They were descended from Greeks too, this is why other Brahmins in north didn't have matrimonial relations with them for a long time.
As for Buddhism, I don't know when and why chamars started appropriating it, Buddhism from the start was an UC movement, many Buddhists were actually Brahmins, wherewver Buddhism went ot took tbe caste system with it, the main contention was about philosophy, over the time it got BTFOd through debates, if you study history Buddhism comes of as reaction to urbanisation and economic progress, it promoted asceticism.
