In a defence podcast by shiv aroor and Vishnu som, they mentioned that the rafales are an insurance by the IAF because they're not very confident on the AMCA. Don't know how true that is

For the record AMCA has not yet received the CCS approval, no money has been allocated yet. Same for UCAV. No funding for higher altitude test bed for engines. They know that timeline will fail because they have set it up for failure.

Just checked, the per unit cost of rafale in this deal comes to around 300 million dollars. The F-35 cost per unit is around 150 million dollars. Does it even make sense to buy the rafale? The F-35 has a stellar combat record. I know it's a single engine fighter, but because it's stealthy, India can use it for deep penetration strikes. Israel's already done it very well.

I'll get hate for saying this but I always hoped India would partner with Japan for 5th gen fighters development. India presently just doesn't have the industry or technical know-how to make a 5th gen fighters (if that's possible in the first place). They were news articles written regarding indo-jap collaboration but in the end, GOI decided it'll do it alone. All the best ig. Hope it doesn't become another Tejas.

There should be a deal with IAF, get investment for kaveri, engines, increased R&D and they get their share of imports. A compromise.
