Organisation Structure:
Junior roles reporting directly to CEO/founder. Like say you're a little rat content writer (like i was at some point) and you found yourself reporting to the CEO, then its very sus.
No clear hierarchy or org chart; titles mean nothing. Everyone is some secretary or some director or something.
No middle management or weak middle management.
Departments that exist only in name. Like the marketing department is just some poor 20 year old social media girl barely out of college.
Family members occupying major leadership roles regardless of competence. My head of marketing in my previous organisation was a genetics grad second hand thinker who ChatGPT-d all her ideas.
Nepotism being normalised.
Founder/owner micromanages tiny tasks.
Sudden shifts in priorities based on founder’s mood.
Charismatic-dictator style leadership where one person controls everything.
Useless HR and Incompetent Admin
HR exists but is incompetent or powerless. Once again just two pretty 20 somethings who will definitely chide you over your attire but won't take a POSH complaint against a CTO seriously.
No written HR policies for leave, attendance, or WFH. They will often to try to hide this by saying "We're flexible". Written organisational documents are very important, even in small non-lala companies they make you acknowledge organisational documents on some HRMS platforms like Keka.
No structured onboarding or training. You are working immediately after joining.
Performance reviews and increments arbitrary or nonexistent.
Compliance gaps: PF/ESI/TDS unclear or irregular.
Salary delays or inconsistent credit dates. Many will credit salary very late during the month and they won't even tell you.
Verbal promises instead of written documentation.
Low or no benefits like insurance, reimbursements, or L&D.
Work Culture
“We are family” rhetoric used to justify poor boundaries or unpaid work.
Work communicated through WhatsApp groups instead of formal channels.
Expectation of 24/7 availability.
Constant firefighting instead of planning.
Office politics take precedence over actual performance.
No Career Progression
No career ladder or defined growth path. If you do good work you will just work more.
Skill development? LMAO.
Promotions unclear, opaque, or based on loyalty.
Job description constantly shifting. Some days you're a lowly support executive whose work is irrelevant, the next day you're Batman.
No project management culture.
No SOPs for recurring tasks.
Tools outdated or avoided cuz they're too cheap to get licences.
KPIs unclear or nonexistent.
Online Presence.
Glassdoor reviews filled with resentment.
Poor digital presence or outdated website.
Reliance on freelancers for core work.
Company known mainly through the founder, not achievements.

If you are a startup bureaucracy is bad. Agree about SOP documents etc.

most lundians' focus is to cut cost first and offer a superior quality product/service later. unless you work for a lundian that's a US citizen. but chances are still high that they will cut corners and do some chindhigiri at some point which will cringe you and make you ashamed for working under a lundian.
two examples.
<1
>worked in a us startup
>founder etc all goras except my two bosses
>world class quality product. think spotify in 2014 tier but 10x better. (subjective but you get it)
>those who work there feel genuinely proud about it and it showed on the first day of joining
>has some rando yearly conference related to marketing sales and overall market of my product
>mandatory attendance for all employees
>without us asking we were given business class tickets as a company policy
>super comfy hotel rooms and uber ride reimbursements too
<2
>be 2023
>lala company more or less
>hackathon time
>held in india to save costs because very few enginegroes are in the US
>3 days, long nights and everything
>someone from my team won like 4th place
>not hackathon worthy but still fine
>one of them spent like 600 rs each day for an auto cause his bike broke down
>win 500 rs award each
