What did the godly and learned Brahminsdo ? They performed rituals, collected fees, controlled literacy, and kept practical knowledge out of reach of the productive (indian)s all while preaching dharma.
The golden bird was fed by the so-called "lower" (indian)s' sweat not by Brahmin scholarship.
What they called merit was really a system that kept the kings rich and all the gold in temples, but the poor were enslaved.

There is no law that brahmin must be hired or paid to perform any ritual. In fact there was never such a law in history.
Most rituals in India are simply performed privately by people themselves and not by brahmins.
Brahmins were/are hired because people thought (and think) highly of them.

It kind of boils down to a class of oracles who do nothing but keep the ceremonies alive by going on and on to recite them all day and debate the philosophy and science would understand them better. Most Dwijas did their yagna themself, the Shudras had their own respective ceremonies, where Brahmins would do them if Shudras asked them to. Then there were Avarnia... guess whose job was that? it was not brahmins.
anyway varna system was setup for failure - because of this - ideally you need vaishya-brahmin-shudra co-operation to build evolved system. sometimes even kshatriya in case of weapons. but idk how much of it can be recent how much of it is in the past - this collaboration was limited.
temples - where we see clear shudra/brahmin collaboration we see how good they all shine.

Because its a lie that they were being oppressed. They were happy with status quo. Unless you are a bantu monke, most people know how to live in civilisation and seek no trouble. Do we ask ourselves why we let nehru dynasty rule us for so long? Do we bother about rebelling against millionaires and our employers? Are latrine cleaners forced to clean sandas or do they do it for pay? Similarly cáste system/feudalism didnt have to be forced on most people. They had no reason to. Even scripturally all of them were doing really well for most part. It is only the assimilation of Avarnia with the sat Shudra and former Dwija who got kicked out for doing shit like raping children and what not, is what led to the Achoota (indian) as we know them today.
