Which war are you talking about exactly? America often acts as a realist power, except in this one scenario, everything academic realists feared eventually did happen. Mostly a war for its own sake, it was not in US national interests.

US did not really invade Iraq in 1991. There were some battles in the bordering Iraqi deserts but nothing more. Regime change happened in the later 2003 war. His and his command's dumbest move to me was trying a hasty getting the fuck out of Kuwait and getting massacred on highway 80, instead of an organized retreat while maintaining air defense cover and protecting their columns. In 2003 he was doomed as soon as it began.
