You gotta realise islam is the perfect religion for the most part to organise society in the region and among the people it emerged. It only becomes an issue when you try to graft a religion upon a race that hasnt evolved in similar circumstances. Religion and race go hand in hand. What worked for 7th century arab tribes might not work for indians and europeans.

Atheism isn't really midwittery but it can very often lead to a completely myopic view of religion as through utilitarianism. Some atheists have shrugged off their bias quite well(Nietzsche and Bataille) and have really provided some incredible analysis of the mystical aspects of religions -- which it really is about. You share the Schopenhauerian view on religion(possibly indirectly).

Agnosticism is a knowledge position not a belief position. It simply means that you make no claims of knowledge. All agnostics are atheists and many atheists are agnostics.

As a hard atheist I agree, successful religious leaders knew that the only path to full control of population is through irrational fear.

On a population level thats easier said than done. Religions do it by aiding in organizing society and civilization, discouraging suicide, masturbation, pullout method, encouraging, patriarchy, marriage and family bonds to raise the fertility rate. These practices survived the test of time because they were evolutionarily adaptive.
