May be (my initial thinking):
It is important for people to have pride in themselves and their culture or group.
They should atleast believe that they were great even if they aren't so right now.
It is this self-pride and self-belief that gives people the confidence to become strong and accomplish things.
I think this is even true at the level of an individual. A man who thinks he is great and that his genes are worth passing on will find any way to do so. He will be confident and assertive. He will take care of himself because he knows his worth and wouldn't take shit from anyone.
Meanwhile a man who hates himself will have no drive. Such a man would be defeated, timid, and weak. No one would respect him. Not to mention that his existence doesn't even matter.
A man must believe that he is great. He must believe that his is genes are worth passing on. He must believe that he has a mission and no one else is going to do it. It is him who has to strive. A man must believe that he matters and that he must work hard to make a difference.
A people must believe that they are great, their culture is great, their heritage is great, and therefore they must strive to become great, strong, and advance their culture and civilization. They must believe that their kind is worth preserving and worth fighting for.
