We are spending billions on AI all in the fear that we will be left behind, but can this still answer a simple question of how to actually make a profit?

How about spending millions on feeding starving people in the shithole? Ever thought about that?

No, and idk if you but OpenAI is nearing bankruptcy.
AI technology is useless in a country like india, where unemployment is a huge problem.

No, we spend enough on gib as is.
We should be spending that money on proper infrastructure to boost manufacturing or R&D.

Do you have any idea how much money we all throw on few gibs each year? Half of the issues will solve themself if we let the starving just die out.

This, the resources for gib is actually bigger than one for research, defence as well as space. We could actually jump a decade of we switched the budget.

According to economics, you can't possibly extract more profits unless there's production/ extraction of resources going somewhere in the world. AI will help businesses in efficient utilisation of resources, and produce more, so people consume more. But we need to see the shift from traditional employment to a creative employment/ self employment with the same speed with which the business landscape is changing. At first, there'll be distinctions but we'll reach an equilibrium soon (provided a big geo-political war isn't going on, which is the best way to stunt development of human race since all the resources go into development of technologies to fight/ defend from another humans) . Humans are stupid, they're fighting pointless wars, instead all these resources should be focused towards reaching the stars, discovering quantum travel or something.

But how? AI is replacing minimal entry level work now, most of things never costed that much that AI can recuperate their expenses. They'll need trillions of profit just to break even given how much commitment they have set out. Right now they're just playing hot potato with it.
I'm not saying that AI won't be a game changer but like the dotcom bubble, it will take a long time.

it's useless metric, R&D is not always linear. the history of semiconductor itself is a proof of it, or as recent as that weight loss drug. this is why you don't question R&D keep pouring the money.
ai is still in nascent stage...economics are being figured out...how to use etc. if you watch the summit presentation of today, you would see they showcases series of applications - from support, to focus on farmers to many other things related to enterpise stuff. more money is in latter.

The way I see it, TCS, Infosis and all the rest got spooked when they saw AI was going to eat their lunch while they couldn't invest a cent. They're now trying to throw money into the same pit in desperation.

Like I said, it will take some time to get in equilibrium, every human desire for autonomy doesn't go hand in hand with the rest of the world. How come some humans developed great feat of technology in the silicon valley in the 2000s while village people from third world countries are far behind even in 2020s. It's because majority of the humanity is not in commotion. But provided, the spread of technology and internet, and pretty much everyone having a smartphone nowadays, it can be said that the common human desire globally would be of autonomy and shift towards other matters, in let'ssay 50 years. And those matters being:
1) creative pursuits and other research
2) reaching for the stars

But how will the profit come? AI will need to either make companies save big from other expenses or get customers willing to pay big. Without those two, nothing changes.
Say AI can change the entire creative industry - no more movies, comics etc, it's all AI. But then where is the profit?? Are they going to gatekeep the industry by only allowing people who pay to make the content or will they make it themselves? Either way, it means that the path to profit would mean cannibalizing rather generating value.
