Everyone here is wrong. The change from worshipping Indra was a very gradual and slow process that took centuries. Sanatana Dharma itself evolved and the philosophy of a supreme being/creator took shape

Indra was never solely worshipped. This is mostly just Western projection to make the PIE hypothesis work.
Indra is also not the god of thunder, but the god of monsoons (whichd oesnt exist otside India)
And he rides a White Elephant (whcih doesnt exist outside India)
IVC seals contain Rudra/Shiva as well as Vishnu worship.
