>The Gujarat government is planning to revamp city streets by introducing international-level Street Design Regulations (SDR) as part of its ‘Urban Development Year’ (2025–26) initiative. Inspired by cities like London, Paris, and Singapore, the aim is to create walkable, green, and people-friendly streets that promote leisure, movement, and tourism.

Key Highlights:

>The existing General Development Control Rules (GDCR) will be amended to support “complete streets” – roads designed for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport alongside vehicles.

>All Development Plans (DPs), Town Planning Schemes (TPs), and Local Area Plans (LAPs) will need to incorporate these street design principles.

>The Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act (GTPUDA) will also be amended to make this approach legally binding.

>A set of SDRs will be published to guide design and implementation.

>The state will support pilot projects in key cities and create a Challenge Fund to help develop model streets that can serve as future templates.

>The initiative also includes legislative and policy changes for better enforcement.

>Goal: Ensure Gujarat’s cities offer safe, accessible, and sustainable street infrastructure designed with pedestrians in mind.

K-kinoooooooo absolute kino. Even if they achieve half the stated goal they will be gold. In fact gujarat is one of the best state for this sort of reform.

>comparatively higher income/hdi

>surplus budget

In my city we have a riverfront, and right next to it is one of the disgusting market streeet ever. I don't buy the riverfront PR. Make the whole city livable.

Agree - one of my longstanding issue is this wonly that we can do limited good work at limited places but scale is missing hence i am very happy with this news.
