Kamikaze attacks were based, and actually more effective than traditional strikes with tactical bombers, since a kamikaze is basically just a manned guided missile. Based are these men.
Masafumi Arima was the first to begin these, and he wasn't some brainwashed bhangi like Chuslims use for terrorist attacks, he was a rear admiral, frustrated by not being able to make an impact in the war he removed his ranks and insignia, hopped on a G4M and was never seen again. Damage was reported on USS Franklin that day.
India had also planned for such missions in the 1971 war against USS Enterprise(CVN65), which was funnily named the same as USS Enterprise(CV6), whose career in WW2 ended by a kamikaze strike that pierced through its flight deck and sent it flying several hundred feets in air. Indian plan was to crash a Canberra laden with explosives onto its flight deck making it inoperable... sounds cool but I don't think it'd work in 1971 against an advanced career with radars, AA missiles, F4 Phantoms, and a dense fleet AD screen.

It would be more feasible if they had planned to fake a defection mission. Canberras are big, and sure pretty fast and maneuverable for bombers and even fighter aircraft of its time, but it is still a big target... going against a modern career.
Still based is WC KK Bhadwar and the other 39 men who volunteered for this mission.

Oh yea forgot about that, Canberras generally need a crew of 3, but because it's a Kamikaze mission the aimer was probably omitted, which leaves a crew of 2...
Who was the other guy?
Are there any more available details to this? Have you read No Way But Surrender? I plan on doing so. This one page from his private logbook is also cited as a source.

It was a proposed plan yaar, called off because the Americans ran off after the Soviets gave a call.
