Gayush masterplan for jainism

Stanford students are now claiming they’re Jain, a community that consists of only about 4 to 6 million people worldwide — to access better meal plans.

The allegations are part of a viral article in The Times, a British outlet

Students say they’re disabled to get extra time on deadlines or tests, excused absences, and even a single room all four years of college.

“You’d be stupid not to game the system,” Elsa Johnson concludes.

The Times article details other ruses beyond academia and housing. For one, claiming you’re Jain gives you access to a better meal plan. Jains often follow strict dietary guidelines, since they believe in doing no harm to sentient beings. They’re often vegetarian, and also don’t eat root vegetables; pulling them out of the soil can harm insects.

The article notes that Stanford requires undergraduates living on campus to purchase a $7,944 a year meal plan. “But students can get exempted if they claim a religious dietary restriction that college kitchens cannot accommodate.”

Claiming you’re Jain makes you eligible for an exemption. “The students I know who claim to be Jain (but aren’t) spend their meal money at Whole Foods instead and enjoy freshly made salads and other yummy dishes, while the rest of us are stuck with college meals, like burgers made partly from ‘mushroom mix.’”

As the 21-year-old Stanford junior writes: “How do you challenge a religious dietary claim without risking a discrimination lawsuit?”
