What do you all understand about काकभुशुण्डि (Kakabhushandi) the crow. Do you believe their is a parallel between him and the Tengu Yokai that is predominantly portrayed with a crow head in the Shinto Buddhist religion?

Do you think he is actually Thoth? Hence existing before even time?
I think Tengu are closer to Kinnara than Kākabhushundi.

Excellent point actually, but Tengu themself are a very loose classification of beings. Kinnara are a much more genetically tighter definition. Hence I do think that Kakabhushundi probably existed before our timeline. He likely has seen the world rise and end.
I think Kaka bhushundi would be somewhere in the middle to upper class of tengus, while the Kinnara would be classified as Karasu Tengu. However the complexity comes from the fact that Kakabhusundi has a crow head, while that is a trait associated with the lower class of tengu.
Regardless that is very fascinating.

Kinnara aren't crow Tengu though. I think it's more like crow Tengu are a bit like Kinnara.
Also, tengu castism, kek
Also, what about Garuda? Another bird person who isn't a kinnara or a crow but still kind of like a Tengu in appearance, being part Eagle instead of part crow?
Garuda is his own species.
And bhushundi became a crow because of a curse.

Excellent point given how Karasu Tengu are all generally crow. While Kaka was initially a Shudra human, reborn as a Brahmin with crow features, he can be sort of classified as a Kinnara. This however makes me wonder, it's not like Daitengu are not "crows", but perhaps they just like avian features in Shintoism and Nippon Buddhism?

In Shinto, Garuda stands as Garuda alone and is treated as his own entity. Probably thanks to how Buddhism spread. Looking at a lore and theology angle in this, i would say Garuda sort of simply existed as his own thing.
>Garuda is his own species.
>And bhushundi became a crow because of a curse.
That's what makes me curious because we all never have been told how and what is it that does make a Tengu exactly.

I hate It when jeets in youtube and other social media say shit like "interstellar was based on this shit" and "kakbhushandi" saw ramayana this many times.
The original text(Mahabharata) makes it clear that he only listened it when shiva was narrating these stories to his wife.
Where did this sci fi shit come from?

I wonder the same thing, not tallying it with the scriptures leads to a chain reaction where all of it keeps getting worse and worse with every single retelling.

Picrel is very kino tengu shrine, draws a great example of how lesser or more native gods are treated well rather than trying to build some form of religious monopoly. Both exist simultaneously, a beautiful aspect of Shinto, despite its very few flaws.
