Older pixel games used to have darker tones, i was scrolling through arts of few artists and saw pic related by @Deckiller. And it reminded me of the pixel games i played in the past.
Most of them had darker palette. Earth tones.
Recent games being more 'aesthetics - soft - neutral' palette is eastern affect, like japanese and koreans.

Holy fuck the image is so kino. I think we should check how some of the modern pixel games did evolve over the decades and how their tone ever so gradually shifted. My first and obvious nomination would be Octopath Traveller, because from what I have heart, it has phenomenal pixel art.

yep, it has that earthy tones but also blend of 'kino' type elements which dominate in recent games. the

The way it is blending the neutral softer tones with the darker earthy ones. I personally like both and I feel a gradual shift between one to another in pixel games can do a lot for "show, don't tell" where appearance automatically dictates the mood and setting. I can only hope someone makes an action RPG in same style, about the anime frieren.

older pixel art games had hard contrast shifts to compensate for the blending effects of CRT screens. Modern games that try to use pixel art often don't understand this and directly replicate the base art without the effects.
