Because of geography, they are the only major civilization in the old world to be completely untouched by the turco mongol barbaric hordes. Many regions in Asia had proto-capitalist or proto-industrial societies that could have created a modern capitalist society centuries before the euros did.
The song dynasty in China manufactured massive amounts of good, comparable to the british in the 18th century when their industrial revolution started.
The merchant guild of southern India had massive trade networks throughout the middle east and southeast Asia, and could have created the first mercantilist societies instead of the italians/dutch
The islamic civilization was nothing to scoff at either. Baghdad was a very significant city.
The thing all these place have in common is being ravaged by the barbaric turko mongols and being turned back centuries, while the euros were never bothered by them.
In my opinion, this is the main reason why euros are the top dogs today. But few people seem to talk about this reason. Thoughts?

Cope. Qing china had all the prerequisites to industrialize and so did mughal india and other indian kingdoms and so did ottomans yet they didnt. Euros werent touched by hordes but they didnt have an easy time either. For them invasions mostly came from nords, germanics and other european kingdoms. Japan, south korea, singapore were as poor as us if not more when we got independence yet they are developed countries today. China and india were equals until 80s ans see the difference today. Looking centuries back in time to explain present day wealth disparity is a cope for the most part.
