Pajeet seethes so much on brits yet they forget that the only reason they were able to their nignoggery because of local royals who sold their asses out to outsiders and let them enslave local populations

Indian economy was in decline long before British came. It peaked during Shah Jahan's rule and went downhill from there.

Even in those times India wasn't different from current day in terms of income disparity.
Only few were rich, and I mean extremely rich while rest dwelled in small villages and forests.

Do you think rapidly shifting borders spreading throughout a region is good for its economy? It's nothing against Marathas, they simply never had the chance to establish a stable polity that Guptas or Mughals did.

'Richness' was subjective. It was definitely a centre of civilization.
In general, vast majority of the population lived in around the same comfort everywhere before industrialization. Size of the economy was the size of its population and hence the total malthusian limit of a region. Hence why India was 'rich' because it had the most arable land.
Mercentile port city states like Venice or Calicut usually had higher per capita income though.
Bengal iirc was also pretty rich because it provided a huge portion of the world's gem supplies (In fact iirc, it alone was almost half of Mughal gdp).
