Raj Kaur, mother of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, disappeared from the records in 1790s with barely any references to her? What happened to the mother of Maharaja?
After death of Mahan Singh, Raj Kaur, called often as Mai Malwain took the reign of administration of Shukarchakia Misl as regent along with faithful diwans, Diwan Lakhpat Rai of Naushera and Missar Laiq Ram. Meanwhile overall command of Shukarchakia forces were with Mahan Singh’s maternal uncle and chief of Akalgarh, Dal Singh and Ranjit Singh’s mother in law was also actively involved in affairs of the state.
Sada Kaur and Dal Singh resented the supremacy and influence and power of Raj Kaur over Ranjit Singh. Dal Singh accused her of having illicit relationship with some officer meanwhile Sada Kaur wished control of Shukarchakia Misl along with her Kanhaiya Misl. Both Dal and Sada Kaur poisoned Raj Kaur to death in 1793.
Similar fate was of Diwan Lakhpat Rai, who in 1797 was killed by a Muslim assassin hired by Tribal chiefs at Katasraj while on a revenue collection trip. Missar Laiq Ram was frightened. He sought Sada Kaur’s advice. She gave him money and sent him to Hardwar, advising him never to return to Punjab. It leads us to believe that Sada Kaur also was in league with Dal Singh. Both wanted to get rid of these two able administrators so that Ranjit Singh should depend for advice on Dal Singh and Sada Kaur.
This also explains that these probably were one of the reasons that Ranjit Singh clamped heavily upon both when he secured Lahore in 1799. Dal Singh was invited to dinner in 1801, and arrested while Akalgarh was taken from him and Sada Kaur was sidelined, neither her daughter’s children were given same treatment as of Mai Nakain’s children, who became chief consort and Sada Kaur was herself imprisoned when she tried to escape to British territories and Kanhaiya territories were annexed by Maharaja.
