Discourse on the Upaniṣads

A lot of indian philosophy is not really given its due. Even among the creme de la creme of the subcon's intellectuals, i.e. /bhach/ users. I recently started reading the upanishads and wish to perhaps start a limited discourse to really immerse ourselves in this. I'm not an expert, nor do I expect any bhach user to be one either. Just have some fun, at least for the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.

If you’re going in blind, I’d suggest reading it with a good commentary either Swami Madhavananda’s translation (Advaita Ashrama) or Patrick Olivelle’s if you prefer a more academic take.
Before diving in, you might also skim the Īśa or Kena Upaniṣads, they’re short and give you the flavor of the Upanishadic method: terse dialogues, paradoxes, and the shift from ritual to realization (vidyā > yajña).
The Bṛhadāraṇyaka basically asks: “What remains when everything known is stripped away?” It’s less theology and more metaphysics, the moment when Indian thought turns inward.

I see, I'm reading the Prof. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan transl. I will definitely seek out secondary sources, however

Just keep in mind he sometimes leans toward modern idealist readings (a bit of Hegel in his Vedānta), so it’s worth cross-checking with a more literal edition later.

Interesting, if you got anything on consciousness do share.

Kudos, be ready for mistranslations every once in a while if you have sanskrit and English one to go hand by hand kek

In a way this is chronological, because context of upanishad does make it easier to tackle any kind of doubt one has in later smirits and upanishad

>shift from ritual to realization
I kind of object to this, with me having the bell curve on the given subject that the concept of realisation that is demanded from an Aryan is very different from the one that is understood by general populace.
This thought is reinforced by the lack of drive among Jeets as well where I feel like too many people use it as an excuse to not commit to rituals. I cant help but feel like it was "rituals are everything" to "realisation is all" to " rituals is actually everything " again for me.

I hope you do, and I hope you have access to the actually Slokas. I was hoping someone would make a thread about the lost Uppaveda schools as well, so it's nice if people are doing the very needphool. Flame of hope for next generation of zoomer Arya's stays lit.

This, also on a related note some kashmiri shaivism does conver a great deal on the concept of metaphysics as well while we are at it. Hope someone makes a thread for that as well seperately, specially if someone is well versed in it, so I don't derail this one.

Schopenhauer quoted Upanishads throughout his oeuvre. They significantly influenced his writing style.
