As a tamil, there i little to no talk of iits here, because parents generally just send their children to state unis (through board marks) or private colleges.
How hard is the iit craze up there? Is it a statusmaxx, like will people respect an iitian just because of that? And is it really worth it?

These placement numbers are a scam kek. Just because someone got placed doesn't mean they're placed in a full time position, or they're going to get a job. The company can terminate them citing any reason possible. If these placement numbers are low then the "reputation of IIT" and the unemployment industry that surrounds the meme exam preparation will collapse. They're already doing their best to keep this afloat by lowering cutoffs, fees and so on.

Good professors and environment is one thing but another aspect of the university is the tag, connections which it comes with. The network matters more than anyone realize.
Guidance also matters, it will be difficult for someone trying to carve path on their own. And you will have zero network even if you do it will take a lot more effort and most of the times college is easy route because it's optimized already.

It is just tag. Many of the professors are reservation bhangis. The infra and funding is top-notch. IITs just filter for smartjeets who would have done well regardless. That is true for all of the so-called "top institutions" around the world. The institute itself should be judged by its citation rate and innovation, and that is where Indian institutions besides IISc lag behind.
