>What is FlightGear ?
FlightGear is an open-source flight simulator. It supports a variety of popular platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) and is developed by skilled volunteers from around the world. Source code for the entire project is available and licensed under the GNU General Public License.
>How do I install it ?
You can download the binaries/installer from here:
https://www.flightgear.org/download/
Or you can use the Git Repo to build it yourself. If you are using Arch, you can even compile it from source from the AUR, but it will take a lot of time.
>How to play it ?
You can read the manual on how to set it up, and the manual even contains the basics of flying.
https://flightgear.gitlab.io/getstart/release-2024.1/en/getstart-en.pdf
>How do I install Aircraft ?
You can go to the Aircraft --> Browse and install from there. You will find majority of the popular and well-developed Aircraft there, but if you want, you can manually install Aircraft from Github as well.
>How do I install scenery ?
So this is the important part, and also the difficult one. If you have Wi-Fi, or an abundance of internet, you can just go to Settings --> Automatically download Scenery from Terramaster --> On(it is on by default). No effort needed.
If you are short on internet, you need to manually download the New Americas from the following link:
https://davidmegginson.github.io/fgfs-scenery-build/
It is the most recent and most accurate modelling of both the Americas. This is the one I recommend. but you can also figure out hwo to download other Sceneries from:
https://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Install_scenery
Another very important thing I would recommend to install is something called Project3000. It's not a scenery, it's a collection of objects that will make your Airports and Sceneries way more detailed and good looking.
>Project3000 is a project to automatically improve scenery at many airports using position data (.dsf) from the X-Plane Scenery Gateway and shared models from FlightGear.
https://wiki.flightgear.org/Project3000
Please please please install it, it will be worth it.
So now that you've downloaded your scenery, how do you install it ? it's actually quite simple.
>For Windows
Simply unpack the downloaded scenery into a directory of choice, using software like Winzip or 7-zip. Once done, append this directory to $FG_SCENERY (in the launcher, this can be done under Add-ons > Additional scenery folders).
>For GNU/Linux users
If you are using the David Megginson link, just extract the downloaded in the following directory: /home/username/.fgfs/fgdata_2024_1/Scenery
If you are using some other way, check: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Install_scenery#Technical_details
>For macOS users
kill yourself applejeet.
>How do I actually fly ?
There are tutorials for almost every aircraft on YouTube, you just have to search it up. Even if you can't find it, you can just look through the controls when the simulator is loaded. If you're still having trouble, do the following:
>autostart
>shift+B to release brake
>TAB to make your mouse into a joystick
>PageUp for thottle increase, PageDown for decrease
>0 and ENTER on numpad for adjusting rudders
>throttle all the way up until you reach take off speed for that particular aircraft(60 kts for Cessna, 160 for F-16)
>gently pull back once you reach throttle speed
>press g to retract landing gear
Voila! Now you are in the air! Have a safe flight!

using that is quite easy. just click on the boces you need to download, and extract it using tar -xzvf in Scenery.

this is my best attempt at a barrel roll yet. it was decent but halfway i gave up and turned it into an aileron roll.
i play this on PC, which is at my home, which i only come back to on weekends because of kalej. that's why it's a weekly thread. i'll even post the cockpit view of the replay if you guys want me to.
REPLAYS IN FLIGHT GEAR
Replays are saved as archives, which we can upload onto bhach, download each others' replays and load into our own PCs using the simulator. we can see different views, such as the cockpit view, missile view and everything.
You don't need to extract it, just put it where your own replays are saved, and load them into your own simulator using replay recorder.
BUT THIS IS A MAJOR SECURITY HAZARD. DON'T DOWNLOAD UNTRUSTED FILES FROM HERE.

PLEASE GIVE THIS THREAD ATTENTION. A LOT OF EFFORT WENT INTO MAKING THIS THREAD. MAYBE ONE DAY WE CAN CREATE A SERVER AND HAVE DOGFIGHTS WITH EACH OTHER. BHACH FLIGHTGEAR SERVER MY DREAM.

Can i include Tejas in this?

wbTGzt

here's the cockpit view of >>1317. no audio in this one, idk why. i'm still learning this recording thing.
>>1321
>Tejas
there's no Tejas in the official hangar, and i don't think there is anywhere on the internet either. not only because no one outside of india really cares about Tejas, but also because India is really secretive about it, not a single cockpit picture of the Tejas has been released to the public, so no one can really build and accurate model.

Maybe guys like kuntal biswas can help. There are cockpit images of tejas out now.

first time hearing his name. damn. his work is awesome.
>kuntal biswas can help
idk sirs, he's an artist, not a programmer. but I'll dm him on Instagram anyway.
>cockpit images of tejas
damn that shit looks cool. interesting, the stick doesn't seem to be in between the legs. it's probably on the side. good, since i prefer that anyway.
but we can't just YOLO into this. otherwise it'll just end i being a Cessna that looks like Tejas. to make the plane "feel" accurate, we need to pray to Bajrang Bali that the actual dev team of DCS/X-Plane/MSFS takes interest in this plane and tries to make an accurate Tejas.
we'll also need actual retired Tejas pilots to fly it in a simulator and help the devs improve the accuracy. once it has been made in a mainstream simulator, everyone will get an idea of how out should "feel" and it'll be easier for the actual FlightGear devs or even random contributors/programmers/artists like Kunal Biswas to contribute to Tejas development.
TLDR: Tejas in FlightGear is too far away as of now. Tejas in DCS is a possibility, but will only depend on how interested the devs are and how willing IAF pilots are to contribute development.

I forgot to clarify that second pic was of Tejas mk2. I will share cockpit view of tejas too. Just for interest.
Kuntal has made the most accurate model of tejas and weapons since he works directly with the DFI members.
He was also contracted by IAF for tejas mk2 design and hal /drdo too.

oh welp.

Interesting got it.
I thought for open source it might be easier to tweak adhoc type. Still cool i will check this out and will ping you in the thread.

Funny enough i know few test pilots on twitter they will probably give a try for lulz. Maolankar is one such person, he was test pilot on Naval version of tejas.

check this out
https://forum.dcs.world/topic/210002-hal-tejas-for-dcs-possible/
apparently, not only do you need the right people to give info, you need the permission of the Govt. of India, AND your own dev team to get the aircraft into DCS. then you also need to contact the creator of DCS, Eagle Dynamics and get it approved by them.
most important thing is Govt. permission. look in the thread, someone is talking about a Eagle Dynamics employee trying to leak USAF docs and ended up being in custody for a year.

here are all the aircraft that i downloaded from the official hangar. the rule of thumb is, the more the download size of the plane, the more accurate it "feels" to fly. high cockpit accuracy can be achieved in low data as well,
for example, the F-14 is only 22 mb, and the F-15 is only 38 mb, but both of them feel like the same plane with different skins. even the Su-33 doesn't feel right.
but while flying the airbus, boeing, and the F-16, i can actually get an idea of the "weight" of the aircraft, if it makes sense.
>>1333
information that is already public domain is okay to use without a license. but what's public domain isn't enough. DCS is the gold standard of flight simulators, they aren't gonna fund or even approve projects built upon "leaks".

currently reading this. very well written. imma start flying the mirage soon.
i actually fly the F-16 using autostart, i don't know jack shit, i only know a few buttons to fire missiles and guns and to retract the landing gear. but this time i'm gonna read the mirage manual properly and fly it properly.
